Canvas was never going to do this for us.

The school's LMS is built for teachers managing classes. Parents inherit it as a leftover — a hand-me-down dashboard with the wrong shape for the question we're actually trying to answer.

When a kid hits middle school the question shifts. Elementary is “did the homework come home in the backpack?” Middle school becomes “what’s due, in which class, on which platform, from which teacher?” The default answer for most families is to log into Canvas every night, click into each kid’s account, click into each course, scroll through the grades tab, and try to reconcile what they’re seeing with what their kid is saying.

That’s not what Canvas was built for. Canvas is an instructor’s product. The parent “observer” role is a courtesy add-on, and it shows: no cross-class roll-up, no cross-kid view, no concept of a household, no way to mark something as “I’ve handled this on my end.” The parent has to do the synthesis in their head every night.

Pearsight is the synthesis. Same Canvas data, same student assignments, but rearranged around the question a parent actually has: what needs attention right now, across all my kids. The dashboard you walked away from Canvas wishing for is the one we sat down and built.

Building it as a separate product — not a Chrome extension, not a Canvas plugin — was the deliberate choice. The right shape lives outside of Canvas because the parent isn’t a teacher and isn’t a student. Pearsight is the third surface, the family command center, the one Canvas was never going to provide.

Pearsight is a direct-to-consumer parent dashboard purchased by parents on behalf of their K-12 children. Although we may integrate as an institutional vendor or store a school-wide database it is only in those cases that we would require a district DPA (Data Privacy Agreement). Individual parents utilize their own FERPA-guaranteed right of access to authenticate their personal Canvas observer account. We do not sell, track, or re-disclose student data. The paying parent (18+) creates the family account, which constitutes verifiable parental consent under COPPA. Children do not sign up directly — their access is parent guided. Pearsight aligns with all global privacy standards and children protection standards, including GDPR, CCPA, CPRA, PECR, PIPEDA, SOPIPA, COPPA, and FERPA. See Privacy and Security for our full data-handling stance.
