When the school filter blocks Pearsight.

The symptom is unmistakable: a block page with the district’s name or the filter’s logo on it, something like this site is blocked by your administrator. It isn’t a login error, and it isn’t Pearsight being down—the request never reached us. The filter sitting between that device and the internet turned it back.

It usually has nothing to do with what Pearsight does. Filters sort the web into categories, and a small, relatively new domain often lands in uncategorized—which under a cautious district policy means blocked by default. The filter is doing its job. The domain just hasn’t been added to the list yet.

Two other things worth knowing. The block follows the device, not the network: most districts install the filter as a managed extension, so a school laptop stays filtered on your home wi-fi. And it applies to every family at that district at once—if one parent gets the domain approved, it’s approved for everyone.

The fix: ask the district to approve the domain

One request to the district’s technology or IT department is the whole repair. Ask them to allow pearsight.com and link.pearsight.com(the short address students type when they pair a device) on student devices. If you don’t know who that is, the school office or your child’s teacher can route it—every district has someone who owns the filter list.

Wording that tends to land: Please allow pearsight.com and link.pearsight.com on student devices. It’s a homework-tracking tool our family uses at home. It reads our own child’s Canvas assignments so we can see what’s due.

Those are the questions an IT admin asks before approving anything, and answering them up front is most of the reason a request gets approved quickly.

In the meantime

The block only covers the managed device. Pearsight is a plain web app with nothing to install, so your child can use it on anything the district doesn’t manage—a home laptop, a tablet, a phone—and once you pair that device with a QR or a four-digit code, they get the same dashboard. Nothing is lost while you wait on the district; the school laptop simply isn’t the device they use for this yet.

Pairing is per device, so whichever machine your child ends up on needs its own handoff—the home tablet today, the school laptop later once the domain is approved. School hardware often blocks the camera app as well as the domain, which is exactly what the four-digit pairing code is for: it works on the most locked-down machines.
